About the Member Research Interests Database What is the Member Research Interests Database? The Member Research Interests Database is a system that enables Members to publish information about their areas of research so that other Members can see if they have the same or similar interests. What information is stored in the Member Research Interests Database? What information is stored in the Member Research Interests Database? Each Entry in the Member Research Interests Database contains this information: Discussion Circle/SIG. This is the name of the Discussion Circle or Special Interest Group associated with the Entry. If there is no Discussion Circle or Special Interest Group, the Entry will be recoded under the heading of "Other Interests". The entries in the Member Research Interests Database are grouped under this heading. Entry Number. This is a unique reference number for the Entry. Member Name. This the name of the GSV Member who submitted the Entry. Surname or Subject Area. This is the Surname or Subject Area the Member is researching, e.g. Bennett, Harris, Irish Immigration. Location. This is an optional item which shows the Place/County of interest, e.g. Doorn, Utrecht, Netherlands, Clunes & Geelong, Victoria. Time Period. This is an optional item which shows the Time Period of interest, e.g. 1750 to 1850, 18th, 19th & 20thC. Occupation. This is an optional item which shows the Occupation of interest, e.g. Agriculture, Teaching, Carpenter. Comments. This is an optional item which provides comments about the Entry. Do I need to be a member of a Discussion Circle or Special Interest Group to use the Member Research Interests Database? Do I need to be a member of a Discussion Circle or Special Interest Group to use the Member Research Interests Database? No. You don't have to be a member of a Discussion Circle or Special Interest Group to use the Member Research Interests Database. Any GSV Member can use the system. The Member Research Interests Database is organised with entries grouped by Discussion Circle/Special Interest Group. This enables you to nominate a Discussion Circle or Special Interest Group if it's appropriate to do so. However, if it's not appropriate, you can select "Other Interests". Who can access the Member Research Interests Database? Who can Access the Member Research Interests Database? The Member Research Interests Database is available to GSV Members Only. You must be logged in to the GSV site as a GSV Member view the Member Research Interests Database or to submit new entries to be added to the Database. You will find a number of search boxes at the top of the Member Research Interests Database: Member Research Interests Database You can search on one or more of these fields: Entry Number. You can submit an Entry to be added to the Member Research Interests Database using this online form: Submit Member Interests Once you have submitted your form, the updated Member Research Interests Database will be displayed with your new entry at the top of the list. Can I submit more than one Entry? Can I submit more than one Entry? Yes. You can submit as many entries as you like. Please note that you will need to submit a separate Entry for each Surname of Interest or Subject Area. Can I Edit or Delete my own Entries? Can I Edit or Delete my own Entries? Yes. You can Edit or Delete your own Entries. You will see an Edit button and a Delete button against each of your Entries in the listed in the Database. Can anyone else Edit or Delete my Entries? Can anyone else Edit or Delete my Entries? You can Edit or Delete your own Entries but you cannot Edit or Delete Entries submitted by other Members. Only an Administrator can Edit or Delete entries submitted by other Members. Is my Email Address included in my Datbase Entry? Is my Email Address included in my Database Entry? Your email address is encrypted and is not disclosed in the Member Research Interests Database. However, other GSV Members can contact you using an online form where an email is sent to you without your email address being disclosed. Your email address will only become visible when you reply to that Member's message. How do I contact a GSV Member about a shared interest? How do I contact a GSV Member about a shared interest? The GSV Member Name is shown in each Entry in the Member Research Interests Database. This is the name of the Member who submitted that Entry. There is a hotlink from the Member Name which enables you to contact the Member by sending them an email message. When you click on that link, you will see a Contact form which includes the unique Reference Number for the Entry in question. All you need to do is enter your message and press the Submit button. The system will send your message to the other Member by email. The Member's email address will be hidden until you receive a reply from them.
